Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment that reduces the appearance of mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems by applying a gentle stream of tiny particles that exfoliates the outer layer of the skin. The dead, damaged outer layers of the skin are brushed away with the microdermabrasion vacuum tool to expose healthier skin and provide patients with a fresh, glowing, younger appearance.
As only a small amount of skin is removed, this procedure does not require any anesthesia and can be used on sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands. Some patients may experience a warming sensation as the damaged skin layers are brushed away, however, there is no discomfort involved in this procedure.
This procedure is safe for all skin types and colors, and carries no major risks or complications. This procedure is safe, but may not be effective for your individual skin condition. Patients should speak with Dr. Zugerman to find out if this procedure is right for them.
The results of microdermabrasion are comparable to a light chemical peel and are usually visible immediately after the procedure, allowing patients to enjoy improved skin color, tone and health. Most patients can achieve their desired results after a series of 5 to 10 treatment sessions spaced a week apart. Follow-up treatments can help maintain these results for a longer period of time.
Microdermabrasion is commonly performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as laser treatment and chemical peels in order to provide patients with maximum results.
Microdermabrasion sessions take about 20 to 30 minutes to perform in Dr. Zugerman's office, with little to no discomfort or side effects. Some patients may experience mild pinkness after the treatment, but can return to work and other regular activities as soon as they desire. Microdermbrasion is commonly known as a "lunchtime" procedure, because of its convenience and minimal recovery needed.
A trichloroacetic acid (TCA) chemical peel is an intermediate type of chemical peel that treats fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems. Jessner's solution, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can also be used in intermediate peels. This type of peel does not require any anesthesia and involves applying the chemical solution to targeted areas, which may cause a brief stinging sensation. The peel can be customized to treat the individual patient's skin by applying single or multiple layers of the peel solution. Petroleum jelly or another type of ointment may be applied to the skin after treatment in order to promote the healing process.
It is important for patients to be aware of the risks associated with intermediate chemical peels, including infection, scarring, pigment changes and unwanted skin tone. Although rare, these risks can occur and should be discussed with Dr. Zugerman before undergoing treatment.
Most patients experience effective results from an intermediate chemical peel, and can enjoy improvements to the color, freshness, texture and tone of the skin, as well as a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
An intermediate chemical peel can be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as laser treatment or skin resurfacing in order to achieve maximum results.
Intermediate chemical peels can be performed in Dr. Zugerman's office in 15 to 60 minutes. Patients can return home and to their regular activities immediately after treatment. The results of an intermediate peel can last from six months to two years, depending on the individual patient's case and their skin care habits after the peel. Many patients choose to undergo routine peels every three to six months in order to maintain the results of their procedure and keep the skin looking its best.
Potential side affects after an intermediate peel, include some skin discoloration (red or brownish color) along with swelling and peeling of the skin. These side effects are completely normal and will usually go away on their own within a few days.
