A trichloroacetic acid (TCA) chemical peel is an intermediate type of chemical peel that treats fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems. Jessner's solution, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can also be used in intermediate peels. This type of peel does not require any anesthesia and involves applying the chemical solution to targeted areas, which may cause a brief stinging sensation. The peel can be customized to treat the individual patient's skin by applying single or multiple layers of the peel solution. Petroleum jelly or another type of ointment may be applied to the skin after treatment in order to promote the healing process.
It is important for patients to be aware of the risks associated with intermediate chemical peels, including infection, scarring, pigment changes and unwanted skin tone. Although rare, these risks can occur and should be discussed with Dr. Zugerman before undergoing treatment.

Potential side affects after an intermediate peel, include some skin discoloration (red or brownish color) along with swelling and peeling of the skin. These side effects are completely normal and will usually go away on their own within a few days.
